A bicyclist was struck and killed by a car Sunday afternoon in Rockville, Montgomery County Police said.
Police received a call for a collision at the intersection of Veirs Mill Road and Turkey Branch Parkway at 1:22 p.m, officials said. The collision occurred when the bicyclist attempted to cross Veirs Mill Road in a northbound direction and was struck by a Honda traveling east, police said.
Both were taken to a hospital, where the bicyclist died from his injuries, police said; the driver had non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities identified the bicyclist as Oscar Mauricio Gutierrez Osorio, 31, of Silver Spring.
Some roads in the area were closed for a time Sunday. The crash remains under investigation.
The intersection where the collision occurred is particularly hazardous because it is at the bottom of two hills. As such, cars traveling in either direction on Veirs Mill Road approach the intersection going downhill, easily picking up speed on the way.
This is not the first fatal collision at the intersection. In December, a 19-year-old male bicyclist riding along Viers Mill Road was struck and killed by an SUV headed west.
