Bladensburg police ID man whose body was found by officer

Police have identified the man found dead in a wooded area in Bladensburg Sunday as one who went missing from D.C. a day earlier, and they say they are probing his death as a homicide.

Bladensburg Police Chief Charles L. Owens said Tuesday that the man whose body was discovered by a Bladensburg police officer about 4:30 p.m. Sunday has been identified as 37-year-old Michael Lydell Benning. He said Benning’s wife had reported him missing the day before in the District, where he lived, and Prince George’s County police investigators are now probing his death as a homicide.

Owens said that Benning appeared to have a gunshot wound, but he did not know where he was shot or what might have sparked the incident.
