A bus rapid transit corridor will soon begin running along the heavily congested Route 1 corridor in Arlington County and Alexandria, from Crystal City all the way to the Braddock Road Metro station.

Arlington officials broke ground Friday morning for its portion of the transitway while Alexandria officials said buses will start operating Aug. 24 from the Potomac Yard Shopping Center to Braddock Road Metro. Arlington’s portion is expected to be ready in spring 2015.

The buses, running partially in dedicated lanes separate from other traffic, are expected to shave a few minutes off existing commutes. They will serve not only current residents, workers and shoppers, but the residents of 13,000 new homes expected to be built in the area in the next few years. Arlington expects to eventually convert the bus transitway to a streetcar; Alexandria plans to study that possibility after it builds a new Metro station at Potomac Yard.
