Court rejects pastor’s ouster from Jericho City of Praise

After months of worshipping in a hotel and high school auditorium, Pastor Joel R. Peebles Sr. and his followers won a legal victory and hope to return to the Jericho City of Praise after the Maryland Court of Special Appeals rejected a lower court’s decision that led to his removal earlier this year.
In April, the church’s board fired Peebles from the Landover church his parents founded decades ago, escorting him off the property after a circuit court judge issued a summary judgment giving the board control of the church.
On Thursday, a three-judge panel of the Maryland high court sent the case to the circuit court “for further proceedings consistent with this opinion.”
The church board’s attorney, Isaac Marks, declined to comment on the decision. A board member said the practical consequences of the ruling were not immediately clear.
