Crash kills young child in Bladensburg area

A young child was killed Thursday night after the vehicle the child was riding in clipped another automobile and veered off a road in the Bladensburg area, Prince George’s County police said.

The crash happened in the southbound lanes of Bladensburg Road just north of 37th Place, when the striking vehicle hit another car and lost control about 7 p.m., said Cpl. Maria McKinney, a spokeswoman.

The first vehicle then hit a pole and came to rest in a vacant parking lot, a few hundred yards from the accident. Police found the child dead at the scene, McKinney said.

Police were not able to immediately identify the victim by gender or age.

A man and another child who were in the same car as the child who died suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital, McKinney said.

Officials said it appeared that speed was a factor in the crash.
