A passenger in an SUV was killed near Frederick late Saturday when the vehicle he was riding in was struck head-on by another SUV that was going the wrong way on Interstate 70, authorities said. It was another in a series of recent fatal wrong-way crashes on highways in the Washington region.
The crash occurred a few minutes before midnight in the westbound lanes near Route 180, just west of Frederick, the Maryland state police said.
Police said the driver and the passenger in the westbound vehicle, a Nissan Rogue, were Baltimore County residents. Police said they thought the passenger was in the back seat and not wearing a seat belt.
The driver of the Rogue was seriously injured and was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, police said.
Police said the driver of the wrong-way vehicle was also seriously injured and taken to the center. Police said they thought alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.
