3 dead in crash at Springfield interchange
By Clarence Williams and Justin Jouvenal,
Three relatives on their way to a funeral died Thursday night when their pickup truck slammed into the back of a 18-wheel tractor-trailer that was stuck in traffic on a flyover ramp on the Springfield interchange, Virginia State Police said.
The pickup truck was traveling on the westbound ramp from Interstate 495 to enter southbound I-95 when it rear-ended the tractor-trailer at about 7 p.m., said Corinne Geller, a police spokeswoman. All three people in the pickup truck died at the scene.
The driver of the pickup truck was identified as Peter Stesney Jr, 87, of Allentown, Penn. The two passengers were Bernice Supinski, 85, of Bath, Penn., and Laura Kordelski, 51, of Allentown, Penn. Police did not say how they were related.
They were traveling to Florida to attend a relative’s funeral, police said.
The tractor-trailer’s driver was not injured.
Police shut down the flyover ramp and diverted traffic from I-495 to the southbound HOV lanes, which caused delays for hours.
Virginia State Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
