Accident shuts down lanes of Capital Beltway in Montgomery County

A van rolled over on the inner loop of the Capital Beltway Friday evening in an accident that sent 11 people to the hospital, most of them children, and briefly shut down traffic, Maryland State Police said.

The accident happened near the River Road exit about 6 p.m., police said. Authorities took 10 children to Children’s Hospital for check-ups, but none of them were reported seriously injured, according to initial reports. An adult also was taken to Suburban Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Officials briefly shut down all four lanes of traffic, but two lanes were reopened at about 6:15 p.m.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
