Skeletal remains found in Stafford County in August are those of a woman reported missing six years ago in the District, authorities have confirmed.
Katherine Bryant was 33 when relatives reported her missing to D.C. police in July 2006. Her remains were found Aug. 16 by a man walking in the woods about 100 feet off an exit ramp from Interstate 95 to Courthouse Road, said Bill Kennedy, a spokesman for the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.
Kennedy said that during a search of the area, investigators found an identification card that belonged to Bryant. Authorities this week received the results of DNA tests confirming that the bones in the woods were hers, he said.
Kennedy said investigators suspect “foul play” in Bryant’s death, but he would not comment further on the investigation.
Bryant lived in the District but did not appear to have a fixed address before she disappeared, according to Kennedy.
D.C. police confirmed that Bryant was reported missing in July 2006, but a spokeswoman could not immediately provide additional details.
