An empty building next to a day-care center full of children collapsed in Northeast Washington Wednesday afternoon, causing no injuries but forcing the occupants to leave, according to a D.C. fire department spokesman.

The building, in the 3400 block of 18th Street NE, was being renovated when it fell, said the spokesman, Tim Wilson.

He said about 20 children and adults were evacuated from the adjacent day-care center. None was injured. Wilson said District engineers are assessing whether the day-care center was damaged and will determine it if can reopen.
