The head of a Fairfax elementary school Parent Teacher Organization has been charged with embezzling several thousand dollars.

Amy King, 39, has been head of the Fort Belvoir Elementary School PTO for the past two years, according to a Fairfax County Public Schools spokesman. Vendors that work with the school began noticing that their checks from the PTO were bouncing, police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell said, and brought the issue to the attention of auditors with the county public school system. Those auditors alerted police.

The money King is accused of stealing came from PTO membership fees and fundraisers. All of the alleged theft occured during this school year, Caldwell said.

King’s husband, 40-year-old Jermaine King, is charged with grand larceny.

According to the school Web site, the Fort Belvoir PTO runs an annual book fair, a volunteer program for parents and a school store, and sells school-themed clothing. About 1,200 students attend Fort Belvoir, which is inside the U.S. Army installation there.
