A Maryland State Police trooper struck two teenage brothers — one fatally — with his cruiser as they tried to cross a road on the Eastern Shore on Friday night, according to authorities.
Tymeir D. Dennis, 16, of Berlin, was pronounced dead at Atlantic General Hospital, police said. His brother, also a teenager, was flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with critical injuries, according to police.
State police said in a statement that Trooper Nicholas Hager, 21, who has been on the force one year, was driving an unmarked patrol car north on U.S. 113, known as Worcester Highway, near Bay Street, just south of U.S. 50. Police said the youths tried to cross U.S. 113 from east to west and “ran directly into the path of the approaching patrol car.”
Police said the trooper, who is assigned to Berlin Barracks, also was injured in the crash and was taken to Atlantic General Hospital. The cause of the accident remains under investigation; police said they have not yet determined how fast the trooper was driving.
