The Southeast Washington man charged with murder in the death of a 20-month-old boy March 5 had been charged with cruelty to children just a few days earlier.

Jonathan T. Fullard, 28, was charged with first-degree felony murder in the death of Keyontae Osbia Moore.

According to court documents, Fullard told police that he was “play boxing” with the boy about 12:30 a.m., striking him with closed fists to his body five or six times. He hit the boy in the head “by accident,” Fullard told police.

The medical examiner’s report said the child had bruises on his face, head, chest, back and left leg, three rib fractures, signs of sexual abuse and other injuries, according to court documents.

Fullard was babysitting for his girlfriend of about two months, court documents said. Police were called to United Medical Center in Southeast Washington, where the boy was in critical condition, about 6 a.m. The child was later pronounced dead at Children’s National Medical Center.

Fullard was arrested Monday.

He was also charged with second-degree cruelty to children in a separate case allegedly involving a 7-year-old girl. Court documents said the girl told police that Fullard hit her on three occasions between Feb. 28 and March 3 — including once March 2 after she accidentally stepped on his potato chips.

Fullard also faces sentencing March 21 after pleading guilty in October to simple assault in an incident in which he punched an ex-girlfriend in the face.

In a hearing Tuesday in D.C. Superior Court, Fullard was ordered held without bond ahead of a hearing scheduled for April 27.
