A Southeast D.C. mother was charged Tuesday with killing her 3-year-old son in June.

Police say that Frances Lyles, 25, killed her son, Xavier. The boy died of multiple blunt-force injuries.

Xavier was found dead in an apartment in the 2500 block of Pomeroy Road SE, where he lived with his mother and 9-year-old sister. Lyles told police that she put her son to bed at 5:30 p.m. and checked on him at 8 p.m. He opened his eyes and went back to sleep, she said, according to a search warrant application.

The warrant application said that at about 10 a.m. the next morning, the boy’s sister found that he had vomited and was unresponsive. Lyles called a cousin, then called 911. Xavier was pronounced dead at the scene, where paramedics observed bruises on his body.

Lyles was arrested by the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force on Tuesday and charged with first-degree felony murder.
