The death of a 20-month-old Southeast boy on Monday was ruled a homicide by the D.C. Medical Examiner’s Office Wednesday, D.C. police said.

An autopsy determined that Keyontae O. Moore died of “blunt impact trauma,” police officials said in a statement.

On Monday, a caregiver took the toddler in a private vehicle to United Medical Center in Southeast from the boy’s home in the 3000 block of 30th Street, near the eastern border of the city, police said.

Officers from the 7th District were sent to the hospital to investigate, and they were told upon arrival that the boy was in “extremely critical condition,” officials said. Keyontae was then taken to Children’s National Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, authorities said.

Keyontae had been in the care of his mother’s boyfriend when the trauma occurred, according to two law enforcement sources, who were not authorized to speak about the case.

The mother’s boyfriend told Keyontae’s mother that the boy was injured when he fell off a bed at the home, the sources said.

Attempts to reach the child’s family were unsuccessful.

The case is being investigated by the Special Victims Unit, officials said.
