District police said the death of a newborn early Thursday in Southeast appears to have been accidental.

Police were summoned to the 1000 block of Barnaby Street SE about 5 a.m. on the report of a dead child, Officer Tisha Gant said.

The parents of a 3-week-old boy told investigators that the infant had been crying during the night, so they brought him into their bed, according to two law enforcement officers with direct knowledge of the investigation but who were not authorized to speak publicly about the incident.

When the parents awoke, however, they found the newborn unresponsive. The baby was taken to United Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, the law enforcement officials said. Police do not suspect foul play, they said.

Authorities are awaiting the results of an autopsy and emphasized that the investigation is in its earliest stages.
