A 30-year-old driver died Thursday after his convertible crashed following what witnesses said appeared to be a race with another vehicle in Springfield, Fairfax County police said.

Brian Benjamin Blaine, of Manassas, appeared to be racing his Honda S2000 against a dark-colored Infiniti while heading southbound on the Franconia-Springfield Parkway, near Spring Village Drive around 11 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

Witnesses reported seeing the Honda and the Infiniti pass each other several times, police said.

Blaine lost control of his vehicle in a curve just prior to Spring Village Drive and ran off the roadway, police said. The Honda struck an embankment and a tree, and then rebounded into the roadway and rolled over. The vehicle came to rest upright in the southbound lanes of the parkway.

Blaine was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital and pronounced dead shortly before 8 a.m. on Thursday.

Investigators said speed was a factor in the crash. They are still trying to determine whether alcohol played a role.

Anyone with information about the crash or about the Infiniti is asked to contact Crime Solvers by phone at 1-866-411-TIPS/8477.
