An elderly man has died from injuries sustained in a Clifton house fire Wednesday, the Fairfax County fire department said.
Firefighters were called to a single family home at 5605 Willow Valley Road at around 4:25 a.m., the department said. They encountered heavy smoke coming from the first floor of the two-story home upon arrival.
The firefighters began attacking the fire and searching the home at the same time, rescuing a man from the home, the department said. Two other adults had escaped from the home prior to crews’ arrival.
The fire was brought under control in about 10 minutes and the man was flown a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, the department said. The man later died from those injuries.
The cause of the fire is still under invesitgation, but authorities estimated damage to the home at $40,000. The name of the deceased is being withheld, pending the notification of next of kin.
