The eastbound span of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge was closed Sunday night, causing long backups in both directions.
The bridge was shut down after a tractor trailer caught fire, authorities said. They said eastbound traffic was diverted onto the westbound span. The westbound span carried two lanes of westbound and one lane of eastbound traffic.
As a result, Maryland transportation officials said, traffic was delayed in both directions. Westbound traffic was backed up for about four miles and eastbound for two, officials said.
As of 10 p.m. they said the truck fire had been extinguished, but cleanup and removal of the debris was still under way.
