Fire spreads through Lanham apartment building; 30 residents displaced

Prince George’s County Fire officials said a fire Tuesday morning at a garden-style apartment building in Lanham that may have started in a resident’s kitchen, spread through the complex.

Just after 7:30 a.m., firefighters received a call for reports of a fire in the 10000 block of Greenbelt Road. When firefighters arrived at the complex, they found heavy smoke coming from the building. The fire was located on a lower level floor apartment, according to Mark Brady, a spokesman with the county’s fire department. About 60 firefighters and rescue personnel were called in, and the fire was knocked down in 30 minutes, officials said.

Investigators believe the fire started inside a utility closet, and the cause remains under investigation. Fifteen apartment units were declared uninhabitable until repairs are made, leaving 30 adults and 15 children displaced, officials said. The American Red Cross, the County Citizen Services Unit and the management at the apartment complex are helping those families.

The fire remains under investigation and caused about $50,000 in damage. Brady said it appeared much of the damage was to the interior walls.
