D.C. police on Saturday arrested a man and charged him with trying to rape a 17-year-old girl after she got off a Metrobus in Northwest Washington in February, according to authorities.
George Simeon Francis, 21, of Northwest, was charged with assault with intent to commit a first degree sex offense. A D.C. Superior Court judge ordered the suspect detained until a preliminary hearing scheduled for Wednesday .
Police had been searching for two men in the attack, which occurred about 7:45 p.m. on Feb. 19 in an alley off the 7400 block of 9th Street NW. But court documents filed in the case show that the second man is now a cooperating witness in the case.
Police said the men followed the victim when she got off a bus and walked through an alley. They began to ask her questions, such as her name and her phone number, when one pushed her to the ground, and into some snow.
The victim told police the suspect tired to sexually assault her but she screamed and he then ran away. The second man was standing nearby and told police he saw his friend push the victim to the ground but did not hear what he told her.
.A D.C. police officer spotted the men after a flier with their descriptions was distributed. A court document says the men initially told police they were playing basketball at a recreation center at the time of the attack, but the center had no record of them signing in.
