Prince William County police arrested a man who they said assaulted a woman and then stabbed her dog to death.

Gerard Darvell Williams, 32, was involved in a verbal dispute on Monday morning with a 29-year-old woman at his home on the 17700 block of Confederate Court in Dumfries. The woman told police that Williams pushed her, then threw a phone against a sliding glass door, causing it to shatter.

The woman then attempted to gather her belongings and leave the house. At that point, she saw Williams stab her dog with a kitchen knife, according to police.

The dog, a male pit bull, was found dead at the home. Police found six more pit bulls at the house, including an adult female and five puppies. Two of the two-week-old puppies appeared to have sustained blunt force trauma. One puppy was dead and the other was critically injured.

The injured puppy was taken to an animal hospital.

Williams was charged with domestic assault and battery, animal cruelty and destruction of property. Police said he may face further charges. He was arrested on Monday and held without bond.
