A teacher’s aide with Loudoun County Public Schools was charged Friday with misdemeanor assault and battery of a middle school student, according to the county sheriff’s office.

Leopoldo A. Cabrales, 65, of South Riding, was charged in connection with a March 27 assault on a 12-year-old student while in class at Sterling Middle School, according to the sheriff’s office. The student received minor injuries, authorities said.

Loudoun County Public Schools spokesperson Wayde Byard said Cabrales, who was hired as a teacher’s aide in September 2012, has been placed on administrative leave.

The case was first handled by Loudoun County Child Protective Services before the sheriff’s office Criminal Investigations Division was notified, authorities said.

Cabrales was released by a Loudoun County Magistrate on a $5,000 unsecured bond, according to the sheriff’s office.

Loudoun County sheriff’s spokeswoman Liz Mills declined to offer additional details about the incident, which she said remained under investigation.
