Man attempting to run from Maryland troopers jumps off a freeway ramp and gets hit by truck

Maryland State Police have identified the man who died Tuesday morning after authorities said he leapt off a freeway ramp and got hit by a truck while fleeing from a trooper.

Maryland State Police were attempting to pull over a man, identified as Christopher Jarrell Wood of Temple Hills, who was driving a gray 2009 Hyundai at about 3 a.m. Tuesday in College Park, officials said. Wood was travelling south on Interstate 495 and tried to exit U.S. Route 50 in an attempt to get away, but crashed into barriers on both sides, said Sgt. John Hill with the Maryland State Police.

Wood then got out of the car and jumped over the barrier on the right side of the ramp, landing in the fast lane of I-495, Hill said. There, a 2009 Toyota truck hit him. Emergency crews pronounced him dead at the scene.

The driver of the truck was not hurt and stayed at the scene of the collision, Hill said.

The incident closed Route 50 for three hours this morning.
