Man charged with leaving mom, 98, in 81-degree truck at Maryland Live casino

A North Carolina man who left his 98-year-old mother alone in a truck for hours while he visited Maryland Live Casino was arrested Monday by Anne Arundel County police.

Dwight Ridgeway McGinnis Jr., 67, of Raleigh was charged with vulnerable adult neglect.

A passerby called 911 after noticing McGinnis’s elderly mother alone in a red Ford truck in a parking garage at the casino in Hanover.

Police found that McGinnis drove the truck to the casino some time before 1:42 p.m. on Monday, then left his mother inside and went into the casino. When police arrived at 6:37 p.m., they found that one window was partially open, and the temperature inside the truck was 81 degrees. The only sign of food or drink was an empty soda can.

Emergency responders provided water for McGinnis’s mother and determined that she was not in medical distress. She uses a wheelchair and is not capable of providing for her basic needs, police said.

Police reached McGinnis on his cell phone at 7:15 p.m. He returned to the car and was arrested for the neglect of his mother as well as an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court on the charge of driving with a suspended license.

During the winter, two adults were charged with leaving young children in cars for long periods of time in near-freezing weather at the same complex. A mother spent eight hours gambling at the casino on New Year’s Eve while her four-year-old daughter was in the parking garage. Another man left his six-year-old grandson in the parking lot at the Best Buy at Arundel Mills Mall. Both children were unhurt.
