Man found dead in Metro station identified ; authorities said death was an accident

The man who was found dead Wednesday afternoon in the Judiciary Square Metro station has been identified as a 35-year-old from Southeast Washington, according to D.C. police.

Okiemute Whiteru was found dead abut 2:45 p.m. behind a low wall on the Shady Grove side of the platform. Officer Araz Alali, a police spokesman, said his death has been ruled an accident from blunt force trauma.

Dan Stessel, a Metro spokesman, said Whiteru apparently fell off a wall between the platform and the side of the station, and landed under the platform level. It was unclear how long he had been there before his body was found.

A Brooklyn, N.Y. man who identified himself as Whiteru’s father said his son was an attorney in the District. He said he was planning on flying to D.C. on Saturday. The man, who would not give his name, declined to talk further.

No one answered the phone at Whiteru’s house in Southeast. A number at a downtown Washington law office listed to Whiteru was not answered on Friday.
