A man who was found mortally wounded inside a car that crashed on a residential street in Northwest Washington Wednesday night had been shot three blocks away, according to D.C. police.
The man, who has not yet been identified, was found in the back seat, said Officer Araz Alali, a police spokesman. He died shortly after arriving at an area hospital. It was the District’s 26th homicide of the year. Alali said police are using the man’s fingerprints to help identify him.
The shooting occurred about 7:50 p.m. in the 1200 block of Madison Street NW, at Georgia Avenue at the edge of a park with a football field near the Emery Recreation Center in Brightwood Park. Police said officers responding to 911 calls for an accident found the wrecked car in the 900 block of Madison Street NW, after it had hit several parked cars.
Authorities said the man found inside had been shot in the chest. Police would not comment on whether any other evidence was recovered or if the man was shot from inside or outside the car.
No arrests have been made, but Asst. D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said, “We’re making a lot of progress.”
That stretch of Madison Street is lined with homes; Nearby Georgia Avenue has several businesses, including a furniture store, a computer shop and a funeral home.
