Man in critical condition after being hit by Montgomery County police cruiser

Montgomery County Police are investigating a crash that left a 61-year-old man in critical condition after he was hit by a police cruiser in Gaithersburg.

The crash occurred late Tuesday on Chestnut Street when the police officer was responding to a domestic violence call.

Police said Officer Drew Soldano, a seven-year veteran of the county police department, was driving on Chestnut Street near East Diamond Avenue when he struck Otto Reed, 61, of Gaithersburg, who was in the road when he was hit.

Soldano stopped, called on his radio for assistance and started to help the man, according to police. Reed was taken to an area hospital. Soldano is on paid, administrative leave. He was not injured in the crash.

The initial investigation found that the officer was using his car’s lights and siren and that the pedestrian was not in the crosswalk at the time of the incident, according to police.
