Dozens of blackbirds were found dead on a Prince William County road Thursday afternoon, and authorities are searching for the cause of the mass die-off, police said.
The birds were reported about 2 p.m. near the corner of Aden Road and Fitzwater Drive in Nokesville, a short distance from Nokesville Elementary School, said Jonathan Perok, a Prince William County Police spokesman.
Perok said that animal control officers do not believe there is any threat to the public, but that a couple of the bird carcasses were sent out for further testing. Perok estimated that “less than 100” birds were found.
Perok said a Virginia Department of Transportation crew cleaned up the birds.
“They might have gotten into some poison or been caught in a power line surge,” Perok said. “I’m told this is not that uncommon.”
