Middleburg couple likely died of self-inflicted gunshots, police say

Loudoun County authorities said Friday that it appears that a Middleburg couple died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

The names of the couple have not been released.

Kraig Troxell, a spokesman for the Loudoun County sheriff’s office, said authorities are waiting for an autopsy report from the medical examiner’s office.

“Early indications are that both [the husband and the wife] suffered self-inflicted gunshot wounds,” he said.

The incident began when police were called to the couple’s home in the 600 block of West Washington Street about 10 p.m. Wednesday. They found a woman with a gunshot wound. She was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital where she later died, authorities said.

Her husband, police officials said, returned home with family members that night. On Thursday, police were called back to the home about 10:30 a.m. and found the woman’s husband dead of a gunshot wound.

“They get up [the family members] and find he has taken his own life,” Troxell said of the husband.

The couple was in their 40s, he said.
