A driver who followed a motorcade for President Obama’s daughters onto the grounds of the White House on Tuesday afternoon was arrested, according to an official familiar with the incident.

The driver, identified by the Secret Service as Mathew E. Goldstein, was charged with unlawful entry. No hometown was given.

The White House was locked down for more than an hour after the incident at 4:40 p.m. Ed Donovan, a Secret Service spokesman, said the vehicle trailed the motorcade as it went through the outer perimeter checkpoint at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW.

Donovan said the driver was “immediately stopped” by uniformed Secret Service officers and was taken into custody. D.C. police officers were searching the car Tuesday evening. Authorities did not say why the man drove through the security checkpoint.
