One woman died and six firefighters suffered minor injuries Tuesday in a smoky four-alarm fire that swept through a condominium complex in the Lorton area of Fairfax County.

The blaze was reported about 2:30 p.m. in the 8200 block of Catbird Circle in a development called Gunston Corner. Authorities said firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire coming from the third floor of the four-story building upon arrival and the flames quickly spread to the attic and roof, despite containment efforts.

Approximately 160 firefighters from Fairfax County, Fort Belvoir and Prince William County battled the blaze for two hours and used ladders to make several rescues of residents trapped inside.

The fire destroyed 12 apartments and displaced 36 residents, before it could be brought under control, officials said. The damage is estimated at $1 million and the building is considered a total loss.

Officials said in a news release Wednesday morning that the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities were withholding the name of the woman who died, pending notification of next of kin. One other person was treated at the scene.

Red Cross, Fairfax County and apartment management were assisting displaced residents.
