Pedestrian struck and killed in Merrifield area

A 64-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by a car as he attempted to cross Gallows Road in the Merrifield area Wednesday morning, Fairfax County police said.

Leroy Jewell, of Falls Church, was hit by a Toyota Corolla around 7 a.m. while he was walking in the roadway near Belleforest Drive. Jewell was transported to a local hospital where he died.

The driver of the Corolla remained at the scene. The crash remains under investigation, but speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors.
