Montgomery County authorities arrested and charged a 61-year-old man with 18 burglaries of Subway sandwich shops, Dunkin Donuts and gas stations and other businesses in a series of crimes that began in December, officials said.
Detectives arrested Willie Ray Villery, of no fixed address, on two warrants Monday. One charged him with 13 burglaries in December and another alleged that he has burglarized five Silver Spring businesses in April, Montgomery County police said.
Authorities believe that Villery broke into three Subway shops and Choice Beer & Wine in Rockville on Dec. 7 and 8, 2013. Days later in Gaithersburg, police said Villery hit a string of gas stations, food shops and bakeries along the 15000 and 16000 blocks of Frederick Road and on Grand Corner Avenue on Dec. 10 and 11.
County detectives showed surveillance photos collected from the December crimes to police in Rockville and Gaithersburg, and they helped to identify Villery as the suspect, officials said. Authorities obtained an arrest warrant for him on April 18, but did not find him.
On April 20 and 21, five businesses were burglarized in Silver Spring, including two Dunkin Donuts shops and a gas station, and detectives recognized Villery in surveillance video, police said.
Investigators are trying also to determine whether Villery may be responsible for a string of burglaries in other jurisdictions, such as Fairfax County, where police believe one man may have burglarized as many as 27 Subway restaurants.
Villery is being held in custody on two $50,000 bonds, officials said.
