Police chase mall robbery suspect into District

Police pursued a suspect into the District Friday afternoon after he robbed a man of money in the parking lot of the Springfield Plaza shopping center in Fairfax County, according to authorities.

The roughly 15-minute chase ended in the 3800 block of Halley Terrace SE, in Congress Heights just off the Anacostia Freeway. Police said they were searching for at least one man who escaped.

Officer Dan Gotthardt, a spokesman with the Fairfax County police, said a man was robbed about 2 p.m. near a bank in the shopping center. After getting the money, the suspect jumped into a white, four-door car that sped away, Gotthardt said.

A few minutes later in Arlington County, Gotthardt said, an officer spotted the car and chased it into the District. A D.C. police spokesman said District officers joined the pursuit into Southeast. Police said the driver stopped about 2:20 p.m. on Halley Terrace and ran.

It was not immediately clear how many people were in the car.
