Police identify men killed in crash fleeing officer

Police have identified two men who were killed in a Merrifield crash Monday that occurred after an officer attempted to stop the vehicle, police said.

Eduin Joel Galeas Mejia, 27, of Fairfax, and Orlin Misael Nolasco Hernandez, 20, also of Fairfax, were killed when Mejia lost control of the Dodge Neon and slammed into a tree on Hilltop Road near Old Lee Highway shortly before 2 a.m. on Monday, police said.

An officer had attempted to pull Mejia over for suspected drunk driving, but he sped off before the crash, police said.

Both Mejia and Hernandez were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. A third passenger was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation is ongoing, but police said alcohol and speed appear to be factors in the crash.
