A boy whose report of an abduction attempt in Prince George’s County prompted fears in his neighborhood has recanted the story, the police said Sunday evening.

The 12-year-old boy had said a man had walked up to him Friday evening on Wilburn Drive in the Capitol Heights area and asked whether he wanted candy from the man’s van, according to police. The boy said he tried to walk away but was grabbed by his jacket. The boy said he freed himself, fled toward Central High School and called police.

Police said Sunday evening that the original report “caused great concern in our community.” The boy had given a description of the would-be abductor, and police said they canvassed the neighborhood, speaking to neighbors and looking for witnesses.

The boy withdrew his account during a follow-up interview and said that no crime had occurred, the police said Sunday.
