Two men were fatally shot in Prince George’s County late Thursday and Friday in what police said were unrelated incidents.
The first shooting occurred late Thursday in District Heights near Addison and Walker Mill roads.
Police said 20-year-old Nafee Curtis Smith was found in the road not far from his home after someone called 911 to report a shooting. Smith was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators think Smith was walking south on Addison Road when a suspect pulled out a gun and shot him, police said.
The motive is unclear, but “it does not appear to be a random act of violence,” said Officer Nicole Hubbard, a Prince George’s County police spokeswoman.
Smith’s great-grandmother, Wilma Smith, said she recently saw him when she was visiting Maryland from South Carolina less than a month ago.
“He was just a lovely child,” said Smith, 90. “I loved him to pieces.”
About seven hours later Friday morning, another man was found shot to death in the 3100 block of Bellbrook Court, a small residential street near the Naylor Road Metro Station in Temple Hills.
A neighbor noticed the body on the ground while warming up a car around 7:30 a.m. and called 911, police said. The victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
Police identified the man as Adrian Delonzo Roundtree, 27, of the 4600 hundred block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Southwest Washington.
Neighbors in the Bellbrook neighborhood were stunned to hear of the shooting Friday morning.
Ralph Roy, 77, has lived in the neighborhood for 41 years. He said it is a peaceful place where he rarely sees police.
“I thought it was a mistake,” Roy said about the fatal shooting. “I thought I heard wrong.”
