Prince George’s County police have released the name of the man who died after an officer responding to reports of a woman in distress shot him Wednesday in Calverton.

Cpl. Tavarras Edwards shot Eljah Glay, 39, of Takoma Park yesterday after a foot chase in the dark and after Glay refused to listen to Edwards’s commands, police said.

Edwards was one of the officers responding to a 911 call directing officers to an apartment complex in the 3900 block of Lighthouse Way about 2 a.m. Wednesday. The caller reported hearing a woman screaming “get off me,” police said.

A weapon wasn’t recovered from the scene, but detectives believe Glay was reaching into a dark bag before Edwards shot him.

Edwards, a seven-year veteran of the department, has been put on routine administrative leave.

Edwards was also put on administrative leave along with another officer in 2007. One of the officers shot a driver in a routine traffic stop after a passenger in the car took a can of pepper spray from one of the officers and tried to spray them. The driver was shot in the shoulder and was treated for a gunshot wound.

Glay’s family could not be immediately reached for comment.
