Two thieves made off with about $50,000 worth of jewelry after smashing cases at a high-end shop in Mazza Gallerie in Northwest Washington on Thursday afternoon, police said.

Officers were called to the scene in the 5200 block of Wisconsin Avenue around 12:35 p.m. for a report of a theft in progress, said Araz Alali, a spokesman for the D.C. Police department.

Witnesses reported that two men entered Pampillonia Jewelers, put on masks and then smashed display cases with a hammer, Alali said. The men took assorted pieces of precious jewelry before fleeing in a car. Police declined to describe the jewelry pieces that were stolen.

Alali called the burglary “brazen,” but said numerous witnesses saw the men and were able to give police descriptions and information about the car’s license plates, Alali said. In addition, security cameras captured images of the men.

“I’m pretty confident these perpetrators will be apprehended,” Alali said.
