Three puppies found in dumpster, woman charged with animal cruelty

Three puppies were thrown in a plastic bag and dumped into a trash bin at an apartment complex in St. Mary’s County after two women had a dispute.

Tammy Maria Curtis, 49, of Lexington Park, was charged with three counts of animal cruelty. Authorities said Curtis and the owner of the 10-day-old puppies got into a fight Sunday.

When the dog owner left, Curtis took the dogs and threw them in a dumpster, officials said. Curtis initially told the dogs’ owner she had killed the puppies and “refused to tell” the woman where they were, according to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s office.

But the pups got saved.

“Somebody either saw or heard the dogs,” said Cara D. Grumbles, a spokeswoman with the sheriff’s office. “Luckily they got found.”

When the dogs were initially found, they were reported to be alive and okay, but were having difficulty breathing, authorities said.

Grumbles said the dogs were later returned to their owner and were put back with their mother. They’re doing fine, she said. Grumbles also said a sheriff’s deputy was going to check this week on the pups.
