Fire broke out Monday evening at a prominent Washington condominium building, sending two people to the hospital, authorities said.
The injuries in the fire in the 2500 block of Calvert Street NW were not believed to be life threatening, fire department spokesman Timothy J. Wilson said. He said one of the injured was a firefighter, the other a resident.
The fire broke out shortly before 5 p.m., apparently in a fifth-floor apartment, and flames leaped from a window. There was a lot of smoke in the building, and water flowed down from the site of the fire.
Many firefighters and spectators went to the scene, which is near Rock Creek Park and the Woodley Park-Zoo Metro stop. It is about two blocks west of Connecticut Avenue and across the street from the Omni Shoreham Hotel.
An unknown number of residents were displaced.
