A 60-year-old man died Friday after being robbed and beaten earlier in the week at a convenience store on Capitol Hill, the D.C. police said.

The man was identified as Carlton Coltrane, 60, of Southeast Washington. Police said Friday that they were describing the matter as an undetermined death, until a ruling on the cause and manner is made by the medical examiner’s office.

Police said Coltrane was robbed and beaten about 12:35 a.m. Tuesday both inside and outside a convenience store in the 400 block of Eighth Street Southeast, in an area lined with restaurants and taverns. The location is about 200 yards to the southeast of the entrance to the Eastern Market Metro station.

Police said they are trying to identify two people whom they described as persons of interest. Capt. Robert Alder, head of the homicide unit, said the attack occurred at a 7-Eleven store, beginning inside and continuing outside. The location is across the street from a firehouse and is at the north end of the busy Barracks Row strip.
