Metro said a woman in a wheelchair was struck by one of its buses Thursday morning in Southeast Washington. The condition of the person was not immediately known.

Dan Stessel, a Metro spokesman, said the incident occurred just before noon, when a Metrobus on the U2 route was making a turn at the intersection of W Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE.

“The bus was making a turn when it made contact with a person in a wheelchair,” Stessel said.

The woman was taken to an area hospital with injuries that are not considered to be life-threatening, according to Tim Wilson, a D.C. fire department spokesman.

Metro said the bus is “out of service for the investigation.”

Stessel said there were passengers on the bus at the time of the incident; they were put on another bus and taken to their locations.
