A woman died Sunday afternoon after she was struck by a train at the Silver Spring metro station, authorities said.

“The circumstances are still unclear at this point, but it does appear to be intentional,” said Caroline Laurin, spokeswoman for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.

The accident happened around 2 p.m., and the woman was conscious as emergency crews removed her from the station and transported her to a local hospital. She was later pronounced dead at the hospital, Laurin said.

The Silver Spring station was temporarily closed while rescue efforts were ongoing.

Just before 3 p.m., the station reopened, and trains were single-tracking on the Red Line between Silver Spring and Forest Glen stations. Metro Transit Police continued its investigation at the scene.
