After a long time as a selfish “knucklehead,” Tony Loring is working to be a father.
Tylik Loring, 12, helps put the socks on his father, Tony Loring, who had a hip replacement in 2009. When his 13-year marriage failed in 2009, Tony took custody of his five minor-aged children. Disabled from hip surgery and unemployed, Tony's first thought after separating from his wife was to move with his children into a homeless shelter. "But I didn’t want to expose my children to that environment.” Before the shelter decision was made, Tony's mother opened her home to his family. Jahi Chikwendiu/The Washington Post
