A plainclothes D.C. police officer shot at but missed a man who authorities said pointed a gun at him in Northwest Washington on Wednesday night, according to a department spokesman.

Officer Araz Alali said members of the vice unit responded to a 911 call for a man armed with a gun in the 700 block of Tewkesbury Place, in the Takoma neighborhood two blocks from Coolidge High School.

Alali said the officers confronted a man who ran. During the short chase, Alali said the man “pointed a gun at one of the officers.” That officer fired at least one shot, Alali said, but did not strike the gunman.

Alali said the man was arrested and a handgun was recovered.

Police identified the suspect as Rouchell Chesson, 29, of Northwest Washington. He was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, assault on a police officer, carrying a pistol and possession of an unregistered firearm.

Alali said the officers, who were not identified, were not injured.

A neighbor reported hearing two gunshots.
