D.C. police are investigating a half-dozen Christmas Eve shootings, including one in which an officer killed a robbery suspect in Southeast. In a separate incident, another officer wounded a carjacking suspect in Northeast.
Four other people were killed in separate shootings Wednesday, all of them unrelated, said police spokesman Paul Metcalf.
An official department report detailing what occurred in the police shootings was not immediately available, Metcalf said.
By Thursday afternoon, police had not identified the robbery suspect, who was fatally shot in the 2800 block of Naylor Road SE the previous afternoon. Nor had they identified the carjacking suspect, who was hit by gunfire in the 2200 block of 16th Street NE.
Guns were recovered in both incidents, police said. They said that officers suffered minor injuries during the incident involving the carjacker.
The intersection of Naylor Road and Erie Street SE, where the robbery suspect was killed, was quiet Thursday, as residents immersed themselves in holiday routines. The yellow police tape that had cordoned the intersection was stuffed in a garbage can.
The police shootings occurred at a time when the country is debating law enforcement tactics and race. The discourse was prompted by police killing unarmed black men in Ferguson, Mo., and New York City.
Citing “the integrity of the investigation” and the need to reach relatives of those involved, Metcalf said no details about the officers or the people shot were available Thursday morning.
A police union official said he thought the officers had acted appropriately. D.C. police were involved in at least one other fatal shooting this year.
Police officers were not present when the other four D.C. killings occurred.
A woman was slain at 14th and Randolph streets NW. A man identified as Gregory Lee, 28, of Southeast was killed in the 1200 block of Stevens Road SE about 9:05 p.m., police said.
Less than an hour later, a shooting occurred in the 2600 block of Sherman Avenue. Police were trying to reach the family of the victim before releasing his name.
Twenty minutes later, there was a shooting in the 800 block of Bladensburg Road NE. The victim was identified as Marquiz Anthony Robinson, 25, of Centreville, Va., who was found in the 1600 block of Maryland Avenue NE.
