A D.C. police officer shot at a man who he thought was reaching for a gun during a confrontation early Wednesday near a complex of athletic fields in the District’s Chevy Chase neighborhood, along the Montgomery County border, a police department spokesman said.
The man whom the officer shot at did not appear to be struck, police said. He escaped after running behind a building near the recreation complex and apparently crossing into Maryland. Police are still hoping to find him.
Officer Araz Alali, a D.C. police spokesman, said the incident began about 12:30 a.m., when officers in the 2nd District encountered two men in the 5500 block of Western Avenue NW, a quiet, mostly residential area between Wisconsin Avenue and the Chevy Chase traffic circle at Connecticut Avenue.
Alali said an officer “noticed a bulge under the clothing of one of the subjects” and started to pat him down. Alali said the man “pushed the officer and turned in a manner as if he was going to reach for a weapon.” Alali said the officer fired an undisclosed number of times and the man ran into Montgomery County.
Police searched the area with officers and a helicopter, but no arrests had been made as of 7:30 Wednesday morning. Police had only a scant description of the man. Alali could not say what happened to the second individual.
