Wayne K. Curry, an early black power broker in Prince George’s County whose election as county executive in 1994 symbolized the Washington suburbs’ transformation from a predominantly white, blue-collar farming community to an enclave of black prosperity, has died at the age of 63.

A real estate and corporate lawyer, he was one of the country’s first black popularly elected county leaders. He died of lung cancer diagnosed last summer.
